1. Product Overview

The brocade Brocade 6505 fabric switch is a 24-port entry-level switch that provides a high price/performance ratio, combining flexibility, simplicity and enterprise-class features. Beijing Brocade switch agents introduced that the Brocade Brocade 6505 optical switch adopts Gen 5 Fibre Channel (16 Gbps) technology, which is the easiest SAN switch in the industry to install, manage and support.

The Brocade 6505 fabric switch is a flexible, easy-to-use entry-level SAN switch for private cloud storage. The Brocade 6505 switch with Gen 5 Fibre Channel (16 Gbps) technology provides a high price/performance ratio, combining flexibility, simplicity and Enterprise-class features are seamlessly combined into an entry-level switch. Designed for high flexibility and reliability, the brocade 6505 switch is available in 12 or 24 port configurations and supports speeds of 2, 4, 8 or 16 Gbps in a 1U package. Brocade 6505 switches come standard with a single power supply with an integrated fan. An optional 2nd set of power supplies provides greater redundancy to ensure greater resiliency.

A simplified deployment process and point-and-click user interface make the Brocade 6505 switch even more powerful and easy to use. In addition, the brocade 6505 switch can help obtain the benefits of Gen 5 Fibre Channel technology at a low cost, while providing “pay-as-you-grow” scalability to meet the diverse needs of evolving storage environments.

2. Product Features

 

1. High cost performance to support growing SAN workloads

Combining market throughput with an economical switch form factor, the brocade 6505 switch is ideal for growing SAN workloads. 24 ports provide a total of 384 Gbps of full-duplex throughput; any 8 ports can be bundled together to form a 128 Gbps Inter-Switch Link (ISL). Switch-based Dynamic Path Selection (DPS) optimizes the performance of the entire fabric and achieves load balancing by automatically routing data to idle paths within the fabric. It can further complement Brocade ISL link bonding to provide more efficient load balancing in certain configurations.

In addition, the Brocade 6505 switch has a low total cost of ownership (TCO) because its basic 12-port configuration is easy to manage, occupies only 1U of rack space, and consumes very little power—0.22 watts per Gbps and 3.3 watts. Enterprise-class features combined with a very low TCO provide 40% higher performance than other 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) solutions at comparable cost.

2. Flexible, simple and easy to use

The brocade 6505 switch offers Gen 5 Fibre Channel technology in a flexible, simple and easy-to-use solution. The base configuration contains 12 ports, which can be expanded up to 24 ports as needed. In addition to providing high scalability, the Brocade 6505 switch can be easily deployed through the Brocade EZSwitchSetup wizard and a new “D_Port” feature that simplifies setup.

3. An integral part of virtualized private cloud storage

The Brocade 6505 switch provides a key component for today’s highly virtualized private cloud storage environments. It simplifies server virtualization and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) management while meeting the high-throughput demands of solid-state drives (SSDs). The Brocade 6505 switch can also support multi-tenancy in cloud environments through Quality of Service (QoS) and Fabric-based zoning features.

4. Brocade Access Gateway mode

The brocade 6505 switch can be deployed as a fabric switch or as a Brocade Access Gateway to simplify fabric topologies and heterogeneous fabric connectivity (the default mode setting is switch). Brocade Access Gateway mode leverages the N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) switch standard to expose physical and virtual servers directly to the core of the SAN fabric. This makes the Brocade Access Gateway completely transparent to the SAN fabric, thereby greatly reducing management at the network edge. The Brocade 6505 operating in Brocade Access Gateway mode* can connect servers to NPIV-enabled Brocade B-Series, Brocade M-Series or other SAN fabrics.

Organizations can easily implement Brocade Access Gateway mode through Brocade Network Advisor or the CLI. Key benefits of the Brocade Access Gateway model include:

Higher scalability for large or rapidly growing server and virtual server environments

Reduced management effort at the network edge, as Brocade Access Gateway has no domain identity and is completely transparent to the core fabric

Supports heterogeneous SAN configurations without reducing server connectivity

The Brocade 6505 switch provides monitoring, diagnostics, RAS and redundancy in an entry-level switch to increase availability, optimize performance and simplify management. These enterprise-level features include:

· Critical diagnostic and monitoring capabilities to help ensure early failure detection and recovery

Supports smooth, non-disruptive monitoring on each port, providing an end-to-end view of the entire fabric

Forward Error Correction (FEC) recovers from bit errors in ISL, enhancing transmission reliability and performance

Additional buffers to avoid performance degradation and congestion due to loss of buffer credits

· Real-time bandwidth consumption calculation by host/application on ISL, identifying hot spots and potential network congestion

· Optional 2nd power supply for dual power redundancy for enhanced availability

The Brocade Access Gateway mode of the Brocade 6505 switch is only supported in a 24-port configuration.
